To test for a given gold quantity, choose the corresponding fluid and needle tip. Use the needle tip to draw a faint line on the test stone. Draw a second line on the stone, close to the first one, with the metal part of the item being tested.
Use a very small amount of testing fluid to draw a line across both test areas on the stone. The area on the line made by the needle tip should fade away as the liquid evaporates. If the second line reacts in exactly the same way, the item tested matches the quality being tested. If that line does not fade away, the quality is different than the test quality.
[To test for the presence of base metals, obtain a small quantity of Nitric Acid (not included in this kit). Put a small scratch on the item in the least visible location you can find. The Nitric acid will bubble green if the metal is non-precious. If the item is plated, the test may be misleading if the scratch is not deep enough to expose the bottom layers of metal in the item being tested.]
BE CAUTIOUS with all testing fluids; they will all BURN skin, and may cause DAMAGE to the item being tested if allowed to touch it.
